Tattoo Aftercare: A Simple Day-by-Day Guide

How you care for your tattoo in the first few weeks makes a big difference in how it heals and how it looks for years. Here's a simple guide to follow. Always follow the specific instructions you're given at your appointment.

Fresh black and grey realism tattoo by Esteban, San Diego

Day 1: Keep it covered and clean

Leave the wrap or bandage on for the time recommended at your session. When you remove it, wash your hands, then gently clean the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, unscented soap. Pat it dry with a clean paper towel and let it air dry for a few minutes.

Days 2 to 3: Wash and moisturize

Wash the tattoo two to three times a day and apply a very thin layer of aftercare ointment or unscented lotion. Less is more: too much product can suffocate the skin. Some oozing and redness is normal early on.

Days 4 to 14: Peeling and itching

Your tattoo will start to flake and peel, a lot like a sunburn. It may itch. Don't scratch, pick or peel it, since that can pull ink out. Keep washing gently and moisturizing lightly.

Weeks 2 to 4: Settling in

The surface will look healed, but the deeper layers are still recovering. Your tattoo may look a little cloudy or dull. That's normal, and it will brighten as it finishes healing.

What to avoid while healing

  • Swimming pools, hot tubs, the ocean and baths

  • Direct sun and tanning

  • Tight clothing that rubs the area

  • Heavy sweating right on the tattoo

Long-term care

Once healed, protect your tattoo with sunscreen whenever it's in the sun. Sun exposure is the biggest reason tattoos fade. Keep your skin moisturized and your tattoo will stay sharp for years.
