Got a tattoo you don't love anymore? You're not stuck with it. A cover-up can turn an old piece you regret into something you're proud to show off.
What is a cover-up?
A cover-up is a new tattoo designed to hide an existing one. The old tattoo isn't removed. The new design is planned around it, using darker shading, texture and detail to make the old lines disappear into something new. A rework is a little different: it keeps the original tattoo and improves it with fresh linework, shading or color.
Can your old tattoo be fixed?
Most of the time, yes. Faded tattoos, blurry lines, unfinished pieces and names you'd rather forget can usually be covered or reworked. The bigger question is what the new design needs to look like to cover it well.
What affects the result
Size: The new tattoo almost always needs to be larger than the old one, usually by a good margin, to fully hide it.
Color and darkness: Light or faded tattoos are much easier to cover. Dark, solid black areas limit the options and may need a design with heavy shading in that spot.
Fading: An older, faded tattoo gives more freedom. If your tattoo is very dark, a few laser sessions to lighten it first can open up far more design choices.
Placement: The shape of the area matters. Some spots leave room to grow the design; others, like fingers or tight areas, are more limited.
What to expect in a consultation
Send a clear, well-lit photo of your current tattoo along with your ideas. We'll talk about what you want, look at what the old tattoo allows, and find a design that works with it. I'll be honest about what's possible, including whether lightening first would give you a better result. Realism styles like black and grey are often a great fit for cover-ups because shading and depth hide old ink well.
